Making Fehr the issue is bunk

After the NHL’s latest drop dead, take it or leave it offer, Bettman and Co. a.k.a. NHL Board of Governors is saying that putting Don Fehr back in the room is why the recent owner/player negotiations failed.

Frankly I’ve never seen such B Market Bozo tactics as employed by the NHL during this process.

It’s way past time Bettman and the Board of Governors stopped posing and got real.

Since the NHL put forward its initial joke of a drop dead, take it or leave it because our next offer will be worse demanding players reduce their share of HRR from 57% to 43%, each succeeding NHL offer has been better, not worse. The NHL has made Don Fehr look great!

During a negotiation professionals ignore the bluff and bluster of PR and poser comments. You measure the other side by what they do, not what they say. By every measure the NHL Board of Governors has shown themselves to be nothing more than not ready for prime time B Market Bozos.

Every offer the NHL has made thus far has been better than the previous offer. And they wonder the players want Don Fehr in the room? They’ve taken to cancelling the schedule in two-week increments. What kind of wuss move is that? You announce a drop dead date and cancel the schedule up to that date.

The problem with Bettman and this Board of Governors is they have no cred. None. Zilch. Nada. They can’t even draw a proverbial line in the sand, like a drop dead date, because every time they have, they’ve recanted. It’s like a 3 Stooges joke.

Bill Daly, VP in charge of Stupid recently said of 5 year contracts, “It’s the hill we die on.” So Fehr immediately tests they’re resolve with an 8 year counter offer. Why shouldn’t he, it’s a negotiation. And what does the NHL do? It quits, for the third time!!!

Kick Don Fehr out of the room because he’s too tough and talented a negotiator for the NHL Board of Governors? Every owner ought to be looking himself in the mirror this morning and asking, “What does owning an NHL team do for my rep?” If they think hockey fans and corporate sponsors aren’t asking themselves, “Who needs the NHL?” they’re dreaming.

If there ever was a time for a rival league, it is now. We need professionals in charge of professional hockey.
